Innovation Lab was formed 10 years ago in response to a demand by companies for a process that enables them to keep pace with fast moving changes in their industries and markets. The Company developed a formal and generic management tool, the ILAB Process which achieves this so that change and new developments occur as a non disruptive and integral part of the day to day business operation. Since its introduction ten years ago the ILAB Process has been used widely in existing companies to create new products and business processes and in the formation of new enterprises to develop and exploit new ideas. Whist commercial work dominates Innovation Lab’s agenda the Company works with universities and colleges introducing students and staff, through practise based programmes, to the art and skill of innovation and enterprise.
Innovation Lab’s staff all have a business and training background with a track record for commercial innovation.
Professor David Auckland, the founder of Innovation Lab, is an engineer by training employed initially in the oil and energy industries before moving to Manchester University as Professor of Electrical Engineering. He successfully transferred his research results into the market through licence agreements and by forming companies specifically to develop products and markets based on his ideas. Two examples are IPEC and Information Prophets in the fields of energy systems and management. He went on to established the Manchester Enterprise Centre and a business incubator for people to learn and practise the skills of knowledge transfer and business creation. The business incubator was, during his time as its chief executive, responsible for the creation of over 100 companies some funded by a seedcorn venture capital fund of which he was a director. He developed the ILAB process, based on his experience in venture capital and business incubation, leaving the University in 2004 to set up Innovation Lab.
